We were tired of riding in the car, so we decided to stay at Ocean Springs, MS for another day. We visted the bayou. The bayou is a swamp that has salt water from the Gulf and fresh water from the river. They say that alligators live there but we did not see any.Then we went to the Gulf of Mexico. It was beautiful.
We saw how much damage hurricane Katrina did to the docks. Then we went to a nearby town and saw a house that was blown away. The only thing left was a few tiles . Alot of houses are not built yet. And alot of the new houses are on stilts. The hurricane happened a long time ago, but it is still what everyone is thinking about today.

I met the harbor master. His name is Richard. When he was in Hurricane Katrina he had to climb out his window to swim to a tree. The harbor lost 46 boats that day. They had never lost a boat before. This man was really brave.
There was a whole bunch of dead trees on a island. They died because the hurricane put them under water.

I wonder if any of the wood from those trees could be put to any good use?
ReplyDeleteIt is interesting, when disasters occur, their effect lasts much, much longer than people might imagine. Actually traveling to the site gives us a better understanding. You are getting a good education!
They put a very high value on trees and even grass since it prevents erosion from the ocean. The wind and spray is relentless! I think even dead trees protect the land from storms so they leave them alone. They are also very careful not to let you walk on any grass on the beach since where ever it grows it holds the sand in place. Braydon
